How to replace rotted rafter tails? What are tails on building roofs? Often, the owner of a home, at one time or another, has a gutter company remove the original wooden gutters and install aluminum gutters.

Cut off the rotted rafter tail with a reciprocating saw. Cut a replacement board from 2-by pressure-treated lumber that is the same size and width as the rafter tail you just cut, using a circular saw. Best ones are pretty solid until the outer inch or so, but a couple of bad ones are rotted 2-from the end. I usually like to replace the rafter tails as part of a re-roof, it just makes much, much easier.

Using a sawzall, cut out the nails holding the tail to the rafter and to the top plate. Cut the nails holding it to the eaves. The important aspects of this repair is the length of the split as you will need to adequately cover it and provide enough length to your scab to get into good wood beyond the affected area.

The most reliable repair consists of affixing a length of metal angle at the lower edge and one side of the rafter. The job starts with taking some measurements to determine the size of the metal.

Slip the new rafter tail between the two support pieces and secure in place by installing screws through the support pieces into the new tail piece. Use one long screw (to inches long) and place it through the bottom of the new rafter tail into the cut end of the old rafter tail. Use your tape measure to record the distance of both rafter legs. Measure the dimensions of the old rafters beneath your roofing surface.

Use a circular saw to cut two sets of new rafters from the same size wood by the same dimensions. Repeat the process for the joist beneath your old roof rafter.
