When is the next civil service exam? Who can take civil service exam? The Civil Service exam is a platform on which job applicants can demonstrate the skills required to be eligible for the civil servant position. While this was not always the case in earlier versions, the modern version of the Civil Service Exam is based on the civil service job for which one applies.

Clerical and administrative support written civil service exams are used to measure the clerical and verbal abilities needed to design, organize, and use a filing system, organize effectively the clerical process in an office, make travel, meeting and conference arrangements, locate and assemble information for reports and briefings, compose non-technical correspondence, be effective in oral communication, and use office equipment.

Civil Service law requires that candidates for most New York City jobs take and pass a competitive civil service exam before they can be hired to become permanent employees. These exams assess a candidate’s qualifications for a particular Civil Service title. The tests are designed to ensure that the hiring process is competitive and fair. Commercially available test guides for civil service exams are not recommende as they are often not accurate to the examination subject matter. A limited number of Test Guides, designed to familiarize candidates with the format of examinations , are provided by the New York State Department of Civil Service. The competitive class of civil service consists of positions for which it is practicable to determine the merit and fitness of applicants by competitive examinations.

Take the Office Clerk III or Caseworker Civil Service examinations. Applications are accepted continuously and examinations are given often (monthly for Office Clerk III, quarterly for Caseworker). Passing candidates are added to the Civil Service list throughout the year. Civil Service Examinations Continuous Recruitment means that applications are accepted continuously and that examinations are held periodically. Promotional means that applications are accepted only from current Tompkins County Civil Service employees.
