Rust hole repair

How to patch rusted metal? Because the rust hole was nearing the ledge under the gas tank door, part of my repair plan was to run the repair up under the plastic edge, to protect the repair from gas or water. While replacing large sections can be relatively easy, the smaller rust holes that do not warrant a full panel replacement are small enough that the average builder can tackle them and be back inside in time for dinner. Repairing a rust hole requires providing a strong repair that resists cracking.

This can be accomplished best using a fiberglass cloth kit purchased at any automotive supply store.

Then, go back toward the center of the hole , scrubbing with heavy pressure to eliminate the rust. All of the rust must go. In this video im showing you the process I use to do small rust repairs where a complete panel is not needed. My names Matt Urch and I. As long as these rust holes go untreate they will continue to expand. Fixing a rust hole in your car requires first removing the rust and any affected metal, and then filling the hole with a fibreglass body filler.

Sand through the rust spots , down to bare metal. Then enlarge the sanded area so you’ll have space to feather the edges.

Switch to 120-grit sandpaper to feather the edges of the repair area. Complete the feathering with 2grit. However, it is advisable to check those repaired rust holes from time to time and apply paint or coat as needed.

Now before I get into it, as a disclaimer, this is a budget repair and when done correctly can last for a very long time. Skip to main search Amazon Prime. Tap the edges of the hole inwards with the ball of a small ball-pein hammer below the level of the panel. Free Shipping by Amazon.

Body filler can be supported by a sheet of expanded zinc metal fixed behind the hole. A suitable piece is usually supplied in the repair kit. Use tin snips to cut the expanded metal so that it is about in.

Simply putting paint on the rust holes isn’t going to prevent. I have included chapters on tools and supplies neede simple surface rust repairs anyone can do, intermediate repairs to small rust holes , and advanced techniques for severe pitting, large holes and rot. I guarantee you will be amazed.

Time will tell just how well it holds up. It is not the right repair for every situation, but sometime it is just the repair that is needed. Never bad to have one more way of doing things in your knowledge arsenal.

These new cutting-edge adhesives boast a strength of around 2bar, which makes them more than adequate for lasting auto body rust repair.

You simply glue a backing patch to the backside of the body and then use a repair patch to match the hole , finishing with plastic filler, primer, and paint. Buy paint and supplies. Rust repair isn’t har but it is time-consuming (mostly waiting for primer and paint to dry between steps).

Plan to spend about $1on supplies like sandpaper, primer, masking tape and poly sheeting, a tack rag, polishing compound and touch-up paint and clear coat.
