Bankart lesion repair protocol

Can you explain what a Bankart repair is? What is a Bankart injury? Specific interventions should be based on the needs of the individual and should consider exam findings and clinical decision making. If you have questions, contact the referring physician.

The protocol is divided into phases.

Each phase is adaptable based on the individual and special circumstances. Please note this protocol is a guideline. Patients with additional surgery will progress at different rates.

Achieving the criteria of each phase should be emphasized more than the approximate duration. Labral repair surgery involves re-anchoring and suturing or trimming away the torn piece of cartilage. A solid surgical repair requires that the torn tissue be sewn back to the rim of the socket. Failure to secure this lesion solidly can result in failure of the repair.

The arthroscopic technique involves making three small incisions and using a camera to “see” inside the shoulder joint.

The goal of Bankart repair surgery is to re-attach the torn labrum and ligaments to the tip of glenoid from which they were detached. With Bankart repair surgery from Advanced Orthopaedic Centers, patients typically go home the same day of surgery. This is called a Bankart repair.

Many of these injuries can still be treated arthroscopically, often using suture anchors in the same or occasionally a slightly different manner than described above. Do not even measure internal rotation at the time of initial evaluation. Restoring the anatomy primarily means repairing the torn labrum back to the rim of the glenoid.

The open technique involves a small incision in the front of the shoulder. Bankart repair and anterior stabilisation of the shoulder is a common surgical operation to repair the labrum and ligamentous structures of the glenohumeral joint. Finally, both the original and modern Bankart repair 2techniques aim to address the anteroinferior labral detachment from the glenoid rim which is 2the cause of instability.

The Bankart Repair involves re-anchoring and suturing the torn piece of cartilage to restore security and stability to the shoulder. Use of a motorized burr on the medial neck of the glenoid is rarely needed. Picture the labrum as a clock, bankart lesions are from the o’clock to o’clock position. Bankart repair operation –what is it? Bankart lesions occur to the anterior portion of the labrum.

The surgeon staples the detached part of your shoulder capsule, ligaments and labrum back into position. Avoid placing the joint capsule under stress by stretching into abduction or ER during the early phases of rehabilitation, until dynamic joint stability is restored. Arthroscopic Anterior Stabilization (with or without Bankart Repair ): The intent of this protocol is to provide the clinician with a guideline of the post-operative rehabilitation course of a patient that has undergone an arthroscopic anterior stabilization procedure.

PHASE I: (Immediate) Week Orthotics - 1. Shoulder sling with abduction pillow at all times 2. May remove sling for exercises, showering, and dressing Modalities (PRN)- 1. Ice post-activity throughout protocol 2.
