Concrete repair procedure

What is a standard repair procedure? Most minor concrete spalls are repaired using neat Type VIII epoxy (no sand) to help protect against deterioration caused by exposure to the water , chlorides , and other contaminants. Minor spalls are defined in Section 2. This Guide to Concrete Repair from recognition of that need. It is designed to serve as a companion document to the Standard Specifications for Repair of Concrete included in appendix A of this guide.

Apply a thin layer of Sand Mix with Acrylic Fortifier added at a ratio of one-half gallon Acrylic Fortifier to 80-pounds of Sand Mix and trowel smooth.

Therefore, concrete repair is a specialist activity requiring fully trained and competent personnel at all stages of the process. One of the most common application methods for repairing concrete is by hand troweling mortars. This method can be used to repair spalled or deteriorated concrete (Fig.

1) or to resurface vertical, overhea and horizontal concrete surfaces. With a standard repair procedure , you can consistently evaluate concrete repairs on a case-by-case basis. It can be used for major as well as minor defects. It is also highly recommended that you have an up-to-date concrete repair manual.

Selecting and Specifying Concrete Surface Preparation for Sealers, Coatings and Polymer Overlays. Typically concrete repair work will include categorizing the type of distress as outlined in Chapter and selecting a type of repair material from Chapter 3.

In some cases, the material section includes enough information that choosing a corresponding type of repair is not necessary. Roughly smooth up with a trowel, then cut around any forms with an edger. Allow the concrete to stiffen slightly, waiting until all water has evaporated from the surface.

Once the surface turns dull, smooth and compact the concrete with a trowel. Applying repair materials by hand does not require significant equipment and is ideal for shallow surface repairs, especially in areas with limited or difficult access. When a crack affects the performance of the structure, then we will repair it to restore its structural properties. Epoxy injection is typically the basis for this type of repair , with or without added reinforcement.

The injected epoxy is actually stronger than the concrete and can restore the concrete strength, but if there is an underlying problem, such as an overloaded structure or some movement condition, the concrete will simply crack again in another location. Start by chiseling and cleaning the cracked area so the mortar bonds better. Then, mix the repair mortar and scoop it into the hole. Even it out and let it cure for hours to complete the job. Repairing these types of concrete joints involves the technique of high pressure flexible polyurethane injection or the installation of an elastomeric waterproofing membrane. High pressure flexible polyurethane injection The high-pressure injection procedure allows the insertion of a liquid into a very narrow crack. A common way to place the repair material is to simply trowel it into the void. Repair mortars are specifically designed for restoring or replacing the original profile and function of the damaged concrete.

They help to repair concrete defects, improve appearance, restore structural integrity, increase durability and extend the structure’s longevity. Jacking Procedures If the deterioration is caused by loads, or in case of extensive concrete deterioration, the superstructure may be lifted (to take the load off the substructure) prior to repair.

Also, repair may require raising the superstructure in order to provide workspace.
