Each State designates specific agencies to receive and investigate reports of suspected child abuse and neglect. Typically, this responsibility is carried out by child protective services (CPS) within a Department of Social Services , Department of Human Resources , or Division of Family and Children Services. The law established child protective services (CPS) in each county in New York. Each CPS is required to investigate child abuse and maltreatment reports , to protect children (anyone under years old) from further abuse or maltreatment , and to provide rehabilitative services to children , parents , and other family members involved. Its mission is to ensure the safety, permanency, and well-being of children and support families.

The Michigan Child Protection Law provides the framework for what CPS must do.
